2 Down, 1 To Go!

Friday, we loaded up Auggie, Charley and Aussie and packed up the truck to spend the weekend in Giddings to celebrate Christmas with Tim's family.

We had Mommo's Christmas Saturday evening complete with a visit from Santa Claus! It was so great seeing all the kids excited about Santa coming. I got a little emotional when all the kids were around him because it brought on memories of missing it last year. I know, I know, everything is fine.

Sunday was the Siegmund Christmas. Everyone was able to make it- including Rick! It was a nice surprise seeing him. I know Ben and Jessica were really happy he was able to make it.

I have more pictures but haven't had the time to go through them - I do know I got some good ones, though. Here are a few from the weekend

Monday we drove to Austin for Auggie's audiology appointment at 9 am. He got his bilateral BAHAs!! He wore them for about 10 minutes while we were in the audiologist's office. The appointment was running into his nap time since we woke him up early to get there in time so he wasn't too happy with us toward the end. The new BAHAs are smaller, lighter and use a different battery than the one we borrowed. It is just so great talking and not having to hear the feedback (buzzing) from the other one. We know Auggie likes them, too, because he'll wear them for longer periods of time. The first few times we put the headband on him, he clapped his hands. It was so great to see!

During the appointment, I sat with Auggie in a sound booth to see if he'd be able to localize noises and voices. In the video you can hear the audiologist talking but in the sound booth, her voice was coming from a speaker on the left and on the right. She would change which speaker her voice would come out of to see if he'd notice. Around 2:15 into the video, she changes to whistling and other sounds. I think he thought I was whistling around 2:20 into it.

The localization will come with time and hopefully having bilateral BAHAs, will help Auggie improve his speech and babbling. Any questions? I know a few people have asked but feel free to leave a comment, call or text us if you're wondering anything!

Annual Craniofacial Check Up

Auggie had an appointment in Austin Monday morning with Dr. H. Never heard us talk about a Dr. H? Well, that's because he originally saw Dr. K and we really liked Dr. K. Between March and now, Dr. K moved on to work with only adults. We were disappointed to hear that (or at least I was). Dr. H is now Auggies craniofacial specialist. When we finally saw him (I'll explain that in a minute), Auggie had already fallen asleep so he tried to get a good look at him without waking up. The only time Auggie woke up was when Dr. H put the tongue depressor into his mouth to look at his palate. Auggie did not like that! He fought his nap until he was in the truck for our ride home around 2.

We also saw Dr. Z (ENT doctor), Mary (nurse), Ashley (speech therapist) and Nick (social worker). Everyone said they were glad to see how well he's doing. Even some of the nurses, who we haven't seen since March, remembered Auggie.

Auggie's appointment was scheduled for 11 am so we arrived about 20 minutes early. We didn't actually get back in an examination room until after 12:10! I was so annoyed. They ended up having a consult move from New York to central Texas so see Dr. H for Treacher Collins Syndrome. It would have been nice if they would have told us that. It was hard enough keeping Auggie entertained for that time without letting him crawl on the floor.

Dr. H said he looked great and he doesn't think any surgeries or procedures need to be done until he gets his ears done (which will be around 7-10 years old). We're definitely happy about that! Dr. H talked about his jaw lengthening surgery being put off until he's done growing (around the time he's a teenager). I wish we could do it so Auggie doesn't have to remember it but I also want it to be done once and not have to redo it. Dr. H believes with the genetic make up and growth of TCS, once the bones are fixed, they want to automatically go back to their original state regardless of the surgeries.  So we'll be waiting for the jaw distraction.

Mary and Dr. H didn't think it was necessary for us to come back until next November (unless we have any problems before then). We went from seeing them every 2 weeks when Auggie was born, then every quarter and now it'll be annually! Great!

We also talked to Ashley, the speech therapist on the craniofacial team. She wants us to come back in May to see her for a speech evaluation. She was happy with his high pressure sounds (Gah and Huh) since he was diagnosed with a bubble palate when he was born. She wants us to work on Da, Ba and Pa sounds with him. But she was satisfied with what he's doing now.

Hopefully once he starts seeing the speech therapist from ECI, he'll get some more practice. And hopefully, those visits start immediately after our appointment on the 15th and start twice a week.

Last week, we ran into our first insurance issues in a few months. Auggie was supposed to meet with a pediatric dentist along with Dr. H yesterday but the dentist isn't in our network. We've had this appointment scheduled for at least 3 months and Thursday was the first they checked on our insurance. They offered a 40% discount if we paid out of pocket but that was still almost $300 for a fluoride treatment and check up. Auggie's teeth aren't bothering him more than usual so we're going to wait until we can upgrade our insurance to see if the dentist is in the network on that plan.

We also found out our insurance doesn't want to pay the amount they said they would for Auggie's BAHAs. In early October, we found out Cochlear still hadn't released the adjustable band for the BAHA so we're still waiting. We decided to go ahead and order the processors (the BAHAs) without the band- I could make something, couldn't I? So the audiologist called back on Thursday and said the insurance won't pay as much. The office is trying to get them back down to what they had originally agreed on. I just don't get it... We want the BAHAs, so let us pay for them. If they're not going to go down, then just let us pay for them!

What makes everything even more frustrating is, we need to send Auggie's current BAHA in to get serviced and tuned. But how do you willingly take away your son's hearing for weeks and not know exactly how long it'll take to get back? We were hoping to have his BAHAs by June. Well, that came and went but thankfully, we met Judy through Facebook. She let us borrow the one he has now. Then we thought he'd have 2 by his 1st birthday... Well, that's Thursday and I highly doubt we'll have them by then. It is all so very frustrating. We decided we'll most likely send the BAHA next week so maybe he'll have it by Christmas.

I guess that's all for new developments... for now. Let me know if you have any questions or anything isn't too clear!

He's Growing Up So Quickly!

Auggie turned 7 months Friday, June 10.

I can't believe 7 months ago, we were in Austin with him! It seems so long ago. I've been reminded a lot of our time in Austin lately. Tim's cousin had her daughter on Friday. Little Maddie was born with a cleft palate. She's in the NICU. I've thought about them quite often. That's not a surprise any new parent wants to have. I know our surprise is always on my mind even though I try not to dwell on it. But enough of that... Please say a prayer for Little Maddie, Mallory and Jarrod as they go through this tough time.

Another baby was brought into the family on Tuesday! Baby Joe Cole was born to Kalen and Joseph Tuesday morning! I am happy the new family is doing well!

Hopefully it won't be too long until Auggie can meet his 2nd (?) cousins!

and speaking of Auggie... He's been inch worming up a storm lately! He works his legs and feet really quickly but his arms haven't caught up yet. He'll watch our feet in the dining room while he's in the living room and eventually make his way to the dividing "wall." One of us usually catches up to him before he makes the move to climb into the dining room.

We've discovered he has an affinity for paper! I guess he is my son after all! :) While Laura (the AI sub for Melinda) was here for a visit on Monday, Auggie cried until he was able to play with a lime green sheet of paper. I kept moving it around the floor and he'd crawl to it pretty quickly. I kind of noticed it last week but this time he actually cried when I took it away! We've also noticed he has begun to cry when a toy is taken away. When Drake was here visiting Tuesday, he took away his Kitty and Auggie cried. Drake didn't want Auggie playing with his toy but Auggie really wanted to play with it!

He is definitely adding more character to his personality! He's also adding more hours to his time sleeping at night! It is amazing!! I feel so rested... well, sort of. I'm sure my body is wondering if I'm trying to play a trick on it.

Tim's 27th birthday was pretty low key. He took Darren to rugby practice and then we went to McDonald's with Darren and Kayla (our new neighbors!!). Happy Birthday, Tim!  lol It wasn't anything special but he got his Father's Day present early and an awesome card made by me. I mean, come on, who wouldn't want one of my cards??

We heard back from the insurance company about how much we'll owe for Auggie's BAHA. About damn time! Auggie's doctor originally said he'd more than likely have his BAHA by July. Well, it's the middle of June and we just now heard how much we'll have to pay. Now, we're just waiting to see if we should wait for the newest model to come out in July or if the current model is sufficient enough for Auggie's needs. AHH! Get on it already!

Well, I guess I'll leave you with some pictures and video. I feel like I'm forgetting to say something but I'm sure I'll remember it eventually. If not, then I'm sure it wasn't too important!

Auggie's Loaner BAHA!

We met a lady through Facebook group and Yahoo! groups who was nice enough to lend us a BAHA for Auggie until we are able to get his own.

We can't thank Judy enough for sending it to us!

It made me so happy to see Auggie look at Tim when he spoke! I was surprised I didn't cry but man, was I happy! He enjoyed bouncing and bending his knees when he had the BAHA on. I just loved seeing that!

We also received some good news from the insurance... After almost 6.5 weeks after his hearing test, Auggie is approved for his own BAHA! Now all we need to do is schedule an appointment with the audiologist to order his BAHA. I can't wait. My mom is coming in town this week so hopefully she'll teach me how to use my sewing machine so I can start making his headbands.

We had a great time over Easter weekend. We were able to see some friends and all our family. It sure is tiring even though we got to spend a couple days in La Porte and in Giddings. I'm pretty sure Auggie enjoyed his first holiday with the families.... He better because there are plenty more coming up!

Somer, my neighbor growing up, has a daughter (Delaney) 3 weeks younger than Auggie. We were finally able to meet each other over the weekend!
